I firmly believe in the saying “words are the enemy of understanding”, but alas. I am no longer a musician nor am I a film-maker, a painter, or a sculptor, so this is the only medium left to express myself to you, my reader.
You may know me as ‘ichigo ichie’ on FetLife. Ichigo ichie is composed of the kanji ‘ichigo’ meaning “once in a lifetime”, ‘ichi’ meaning “One” and ‘e’ meaning “Meeting”. Literally “One Lifetime, One Meeting”. As a philosophy, it is often interpreted as “Each Moment, Only Once”.
It is a popular calligraphy displayed in Japanese Tea ceremonies to remind the guests of the importance of this opportunity – as it will never come again. Value each and every moment, each person and each new meeting, as it will happen only once in your lifetime! 🙂 As I’ve grown older, I’ve also come to embrace the concepts of Wabi sabi, a view of the world centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete” & Kintsugi, A philosophy of treating breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.
